Final touches are being put to this year’s UK Dairy Day event, which takes place next month at the International Centre, Telford, Shropshire.
The dedicated annual event for the dairy industry on 16 September brings together all facets of the industry for face-to-face networking – alongside a showcase of some of the UK’s best dairy cattle breeds.
This year’s Sharing Knowledge Zone will feature seminars and industry panels with leading industry professionals covering a range of dairy related topics. It will include the presentation of the UK Dairy Road Map.
A special AHDB seminar will examine breeding and feeding methods to reduce dairy herd carbon footprints. This seminar explores how genetics and nutrition interact to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
John Newbold and Marco Winters will examine how reformulating diets, selecting and breeding more efficient animals, and understanding the links between these approaches can influence a farm’s overall greenhouse gas profile.
The session will also introduce the UK?Dairy Carbon Network, highlighting how evidence?based approaches to breeding and feeding can support practical, farm?relevant emission reductions across the dairy sector.
Good practice
Industry experts will look at ways to build a better dairy future. Panellists will include Edward Lott, EJL Business Consulting; Mel Shipley, Oxbury Bank; Ian Harvey, NFU Dairy; Richard Corbett, Robert Parry & Partners; and Fraser Jones, Calcourt Farms.
Afternoon sessions will look at technology and the use of artificial intelligence in agriculture. It will include a presentation by Sergio Ooijens, a director of Business Team Next, who will talk about AI in agriculture and how Lely are working with it.
Some 300 businesses are expected to attend the event from the UK and further afield. Thousands of visitors are expected – and six different breeds judged in the main ring.
Judges’ details
Judges for this year’s one-day have now been confirmed. Top cattle show judges for the Holstein, Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Dairy Shorthorn, Guernsey and Jersey breeds will cast their professional eyes over the pedigree under the spotlights during a full day of cattle classes.
They will include Gary Jones (Holstein); Matthew Service (Ayrshire); Richard Thomas (Brown Swiss and Guernsey); Blaise Tomlinson, Dairy Shorthorn); and Phil Arrell, (Jersey).
