Organic and low-input farmers have a new option for tackling insect pressure in grain stores ahead of harvest following the launch of a plant-based insecticide.
Approved for use in organic systems, Organ-X Pro is designed to control pests including flies, midges, ants, cockroaches and stored product insects such as beetles, grain weevils and red mites. The treatment offers farmers another tool to help protect stored crops and maintain hygiene standards, says Roger Simpson, managing director at manufacturer and pest control specialists Lodi UK
Complete solution
“With this product, we’re now covering all bases, offering a complete solution for pest management across grain storage while supporting low-input and organic farming practices,” he says. “Organ-X Pro is designed for flexibility, with multiple application methods to suit a variety of farming environments, including use as a surface spray, pressure spray, or thermal and cold fogging.”
For surface and pressure spraying, which are aimed at controlling crawling insects such as red mites and litter beetles, Mr Simpson says Organ-X Pro should be diluted to 8% with water.
“I’d advise spraying 50ml of the diluted solution per square metre in infested areas, such as walls, door jambs, and cracks where pests typically settle. The treated area should be ventilated during treatment and for up to two hours afterwards.”
The product can also be applied through thermal and cold fogging systems to tackle flies and other flying insects in enclosed storage areas.
“For fogging, which is especially effective for controlling flies and other flying insects, the product should be diluted to 20% with water and applied to indoor spaces at a rate of 200ml per 1,000m?.” Mr Simpson adds: “When fogging, grain should be removed from the treated space, and surfaces should be covered to avoid contamination. The room should be left to act for four hours, followed by thorough ventilation before re-entry.”
Natural extract
Organ-X Pro is produced using a natural extract from Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium and is approved for up to 11 applications a year. Approval makes it particularly relevant for businesses seeking pest control options compatible with organic standards.
“We’re proud to offer such a versatile product that gives farmers a flexible option for managing insect pressure in empty grain stores and other farm environments, where organic-approved products are required,” says Mr Simpson.
Kidi says the treatment can be used across a range of farm environments where insect pressure threatens crop quality, storage standards and operational hygiene – including in the run-up to harvest.
