Advice for potato store managers will be available at a special event in Lincolnshire this month.
Strategic Potato Storage Day is an industry event dedicated to knowledge and innovation in potato storage. Organised by Potato Storage Insight, it will bring together potato growers, store managers, researchers and technology providers.
The event will be held on 21 May at Fleet Lodge Farm, Holbeach. It will discuss developments in sprout suppression technologies, energy management and storage efficiency.
Attendees will gain first-hand insights into field trial results, cutting-edge control systems and practical strategies for optimising potato storage conditions while reducing waste and costs.
The 2025 edition will feature live demonstrations, expert talks and networking opportunities, with a spotlight on sustainable, residue-free storage solutions – such as ethylene-based technologies.
Visitors to the event will also discover the results of a field trial undertaken by SDF Agriculture, PSI and Greenwich University. They will be able to hear about the latest developments in energy management and storage efficiency.
Potato sprout control technology provider Biofresh Safestore, which is celebrating its 21st anniversary this year, is offering a 10% installation discount to attendees who commit to a site survey on the day.
Presentations
“Potato Storage Insight has put together a very interesting series of talks and presentations, and it will be a great chance for us to celebrate our 21 years of helping store managers extend the life of their potatoes,” says operations director Jeremy Barraclough.
“Since we completed our first Safestore system installation in 2004, we have gone on to install systems treating more than half a million tonnes of potatoes at farms and potato stores across the UK, Europe and further afield.”
Ethylene-based potato sprout suppressant systems extend the life of stored crops without any chemical residue. Ethylene has been used commercially since 2003 as an alternative to more traditional chemical-based sprout suppressants.
Originally targeted at providing a residue-free sprout suppressant solution for pre-pack crops, further to the demise of CIPC in Europe, ethylene is also used extensively in crops destined for processing.
The Biofresh Safestore system is suitable for facilities with single stores as well as multi-chamber sites, where it can connect and control all stores from one central system managed by an HMI panel.
